Ice coated Prickly Pear here at E-Rock

Ice coated Prickly Pear here at E-Rock

Sunday was my birthday, woohoo! As you may have guessed from my last post, I’m more for quiet and simple celebrations so there was no big party. But I did have a good week.

On Thursday Julie and I went out and saw a movie in Kerrville – Jupiter Ascending. It had a decent plot and amazing special effects, I have no regrets. Afterward there was frozen custard, mmm.

On Saturday Enchanted Rock hosted it’s first ever Star Festival. Just recently the park was certified as dark sky compliant. The Fredericksburg and Austin Astronomer clubs brought out some big telescopes for night sky viewing and there were several vendors too. It was the longest work day I’ve clocked yet at 10 hours, but I hardly count a starlit sojourn to the top of the rock as “work”. There were also two people who gave a presentation on constellations that was very interesting. I’ve always wanted to be able to identify more stars, Orion and the Big Dipper was about the limit of what I knew beforehand.

On Sunday we didn’t have to go into work at all, it was drizzly all day and most folks stayed home. I’m just glad the clouds didn’t roll in until late on Saturday and the sky was clear for the festival. For my birthday I stayed in with Julie and we played cards, watched some TV, went out for Thai food for dinner, and she baked a giant cookie for desert – we’ll be eating it for a week.

Today (Monday) I am groggy from the medicine I’ve taken to combat the cold Julie had last week, so my apologies if this post is lacking the usual finesse. Yesterday’s drizzle has turned to freezing rain and the park is all but closed, most of the rangers have gone home. Ice encased grass crunches underfoot and the step leading into the RV has turned into a death trap. No matter, I’ve endured worse and this, too, shall pass.

Odds and Ends

I’m done with work for the day. It was cool and comfortable enough to eat lunch outside at the picnic table, and now a light breeze blows through the Casita while I type this up and watch the mid-afternoon goings on in the campground. It is a good day. It was very surreal, coming back…

There’s No Forcing Art

April 10, 2016 |

Every now and then, I sit in front of the computer to write a blog post, and nothing comes. Sometimes pushing through the resistance works. Sometimes having patience and trying again later works. And sometimes, nothing does. I’ve always viewed blogging as an art form. You can’t force art. If you try, the final product…

I have also gotten to that point where I prefer quiet celebrations of my birthday over the big to-do. Happy Belated birthday! Was it a giant tollhouse cookie? Those are awesome!

Julie made it, it was a chocolate chip cookie… with crushed oreos mixed in. Tasty…

Happy Birthday, Becky, and many more!

The dark sky thing is cool. When you’re in an area like that, it’s easy too see why the ancients were so fascinated by the stars. Every person born was thought to have their own star.

Yeah Andrew, it was a very special evening. I learned so much!

    Hey Becky,
    happy belated birthday!
today was my birthday and I decided to treat myself to the best barbecue in the Hill Country, at least I like to think so. It was very good, its called Cooper’s Pit BBQ and it’s located in Llano Texas. It’s a little pricey but it’s really really good.

    • Becky on February 26, 2015 at 9:58 am

Oh, I’ve heard lots about Cooper’s Roger! It’s not too far from here, Julie and I are going to try it before we leave Texas but it just hasn’t worked out yet. Thanks for the birthday wishes.

Badlands and Zion were both Dark Sky parks too, I wonder if Yellowstone is?

Glad you enjoyed the article. I put that collage picture together especially for that.
